Planning and Tips - Gammon Ranges 3 Day Italowie Gorge Circuit Hike
Early morning light in a drought stricken Gammon Ranges. We do a three day 46 km circuit through the Gammon Ranges in South Australia. We find deep hidden gorges glowing with colour, ancient red gums clinging to life, vast stony plains, red earth, brilliant blue skies, and sunrise setting escarpments ablaze.
Day 1 - Gammon Ranges: Italowie Gorge
We hike through spectacular Italowie Gorge, past towering red gums and across a stony undulating plain encircled by mountains.. We find a little flat-topped knoll not far from the intersection of McKinley Springs Track and Wuturta Loop Track on which to camp.
Day 2 - Gammon Ranges: Balcanoona Creek
Making our way along the rocky bed of Balcanoona Creek on the way to Bunyip Chasm as part of our three day circuit hike in the Gammon Ranges.
Day 3 - Gammon Ranges: Weetootla Gorge
Weetootla springs - water at last! Whilst it is salty and not fit to drink, it still provides a pleasant change from the dry rocky plains and gorges we’ve hiked through. We push on before heading southwest cross-country on the plain beside the southeastern flank of the Balcanoona Range (Wirtiurdla Yurru) to return to our starting point of Italowie Gorge Campsite.
