Planning and Tips: 11 Day Circuit Hike, Walls of Jerusalem National Park
We outline the assumptions and processes we used to plan our 11 day hike in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park. Tips for food, water, daily distance calculations and bail out options are provided. Gear selection is also covered in this post.
Day 1: Dixons Kingdom
We catch a bus from Launceston, planning to camp at Dixons Kingdom. We are slow hikers and, once on the track, we take plenty of time to absorb the amazing scenery, with expansive views westward to the Overland Track, as well as the Walls themselves, including a short side trip to the very beautiful Pool of Bethesda.
Day 2: Mt Jerusalem, Solomon’s Throne
A view of Lake Salomone, Walls of Jerusalem on Day 2. We start today heading up to King David's Peak. However, the weather starts to set in at Solomon’s Thone on the way to King David's Peak, so we turn back early to camp. When the weather later clears we have time for Mt Jerusalem. We return to camp just as the weather sets in once more. Amazing views!
Day 3: Lake Ball, Lake Adelaide and Lake Meston
Sunset over Lake Meston Walls of Jerusalem National Park. Very wild and wet weather overnight and it still looks menacing, so we decide to stay in the valley and abort another attempt at King David’s Peak. Instead, we head off to Lake Meston and camp at its head. The track is partially overgrown and with logs to climb over. The scrubbiness of the track makes this a long day, but enjoyable day with many interesting and beautiful aspects.
Day 4: Lake Myrtle
Campsite at Lake Myrtle with Mt Rogoona in the background, Walls of Jerusalem National Park.
Day 5: Junction Lake
Lake Youd Walls of Jerusalem National Park on the way to Junction Lake. This is a wet day of walking with many light rain showers, often blown horizontally! But again, the country is more than making up for the inclement weather and after all we are in the highlands of Tasmania!
Day 6: Lake Artemis
We head off to Lake Artemis and hopefully up Mt Jupiter we figure today could still be a short rest-day walk. The wet and windy weather mean that Mt Jupiter remains obscured by cloud, but we do get to Lake Artemis and also experience one of the most beautiful sections of Beech Forest we have ever seen.
Day 7: Chapter Lake
Getting near Chapter Lake Walls of Jerusalem National Park. A gentle gradient up the valley floor to Chapter Lake with a steep but short section up to Tent Tarn if we’re keen.
Day 8: Tent Tarn, Twin Spires South
We walk past this creek and Chalice Lake Walls of Jerusalem National Park on our way to Tent Tarn where we set up camp. There is still plenty of light so we walk the cairned route to Twin Spires South rather than the unmarked hike to Cathedral Mountain.
Day 9: Chalice Lake
We pull up camp and walk a short distance to Lake Chalice for a rest day. The weather is great, the scenery superb. Well worth stopping for the day.
Day 11: Lewis & Oxley Waterfalls and Cake
Wild Sky mammatus behind Mersey River near Pine Hut Walls of Jerusalem Nation Park. We take a short walk to check out Lewis and Oxley falls in Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair and National Park before returning to wait for the bus at Mersey Forest Road.
