Day 9 - Fimmvorduhals: Baldvinnskali to Skogar

It’s our last day. I’m ready for a rest but sad, too. This section brings waterfalls – 25 of them! Hailing from the driest state on the driest continent of Australia, we think this is pretty special! It will be almost entirely downhill, so easy walking, and there should be spectacular views.

Map for the day - 15 km and its all down hill.

We head off past the last of the snow.

Skoga River. Doesn’t look like much now, but wait until the other end!

First waterfall. 24 to go!

Hiker on wood and steel bridge across narrow rushing stream

No more rivers to wade! This is a very popular, busy trail – many do this as a day hike out and return. Yesterday we saw Young Fit Things running from Skogar to Thorsmork in one day!

Waterfall cascading into deep pool with spray mist Fimmvorduhals Track Iceland

Can you get sick of waterfalls? Nope. They are all different.

Waterfall in mossy gorge joined by cascading tributary upstream

The spectacular canyon. It just goes and goes with many viewing vantage spots.

Better get a pic while there are so many people about!

Closeup of fluffy white wind tosses flowers of cottongrass in a grassy plain

Cotton grass (Eriophorum scheutseuri). It was once soaked in fat and used as lamp wicking.

A few humpty-doos, with Daltindur majestic in the background.

Boulder strewn river in deep mossy gorge with rocky mountain in background

The lower we get, the more people there are: Skogafoss is a tourist highlight.

Erosion warning sign in foreground on eroded track with hikers in background

And we tourists do a lot of damage. This sign would have been good at the other end as well.

Hiker with orange pack at top of watefall with scattered farmhouses and a mountain in the background Skogafoss Iceland

Wow. The mist is spray droplets rising from the waterfall below.

View down hillside with line of tourists climbing steps with a crowded carpark beyond

Back to civilization …. its actually a bit confronting!

Meadowsweet, and our hotel somewhere in the background.

Ground level view of the huge Skogafoss waterfall with tourists gathered to view the spectacle

And the mighty Skogafoss, with mighty crowds. The end of our wonderful hike, with each day filled with memories for a lifetime.
