The hike to Mt Sonder is a steady climb through scattered wildflowers that rewards you with breathtaking views in every direction from the highest peak of the Larapinta.
Hills, woodland, wildflowers, a rocky gap and evening views make a fun and varied day as you head off along the Larapinta Trail from Redbank Gorge through Rocky Bar Gap to Hilltop campsite.
From Hilltop to Finke you’ll encounter water crossings, plains and a steep descent with expansive views as you progress along the Larapinta Trail.
As you leave Finke campsite you’ll cross waterways, traverse rolling hills along red rocky trails, until you reach another lookout before finally you arrive at the spectacular Ormiston Gorge, peaceful in the evening when all the tour buses have left.
A flower-filled valley, rocky gorge, sandy river, hidden pool, vast plain and lookout views: this spectacular day hike truly is a mini-Larapinta.
